DAY ONE: OTC Elite's Mead advances to 5,000m final

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon Track Club Elite's Hassan Mead picked a good time to post a season best in the 5,000 meters on Friday.

Mead, a 2016 Olympian, placed eighth in the second qualifying heat of the 5,000m with a time of 13:22.11 at the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar. His performance secured a spot in Monday's final of the 5,000m at 11:20 a.m. (PDT).

This is Mead's third consecutive appearance on the World Championship stage. He placed 15th overall in the 10,000m at the past two Championships in London (2017) and Beijing (2015).

It was a different story for OTC Elite's Hanna Green.

Competing in her first World Championships, the second-year pro out of Virginia Tech failed to advance out of the first round of the 800m with a time of 2:04.37, placing seventh in her qualifying heat.

Green came into the meet as the world's fifth-best performer in the 800m after a breakout season in which she lowered her PR to 1:58.19, earned runner-up honors at the USA Championships, and won her first Diamond League title in Paris.
