OTC Elite’s Mead takes fifth at Carlsbad 5000

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon Track Club Elite’s Hassan Mead made his outdoor season debut with a fifth-place performance at the 34th annual Carlsbad 5000 in San Diego on April 7.

Mead, a 2016 Olympic finalist in the 5,000 meters, crossed the finish line in a time of 14 minutes, 3 seconds. It was his first competitive race since August of 2018.

“It was time to test his fitness in a competitive race after a long period of basic training,” OTC Elite coach Mark Rowland said. “Now we’ll begin more specific work. It was nice to see him run a solid race with no expectations.”

In 2018, Mead was ranked third in the U.S. in the 5,000m by Track & Field News magazine. The 2017 U.S. 10,000m champion placed 15th in that event with a PR of 27:32.49 at the IAAF World Championships in London.
